I don’t think that this could be a more stressful year if it tried. So far 2020 has not been good to any of us. As hard as I’ve tried to stay afloat and get myself headed in the right direction, the world has been working against all of us. As you can imagine my finances have been the biggest struggle. I lost my job several months ago and I have been doing my best to keep up with everything. However, it’s rather difficult when the indoor air temperature is hot and humid enough to be dangerous every day. Because we have entered the warmest and most difficult part of the year I have had no choice but to use my air conditioning unit all the time. I’m not happy about the energy bills that I’m racking up with my cooling system usage but I also have no choice. It’s not like I can go to work to utilize an HVAC system for free. Instead, I have to use my own thermostat and pray that my air conditioning unit can make it through the summer. I’m not happy about this because my AC system was failing last summer. At the time I decided it was best to put off the air conditioning repair for as long as I could. I never expected that I would be in a worse financial situation when the AC unit was finally due for replacement. I find myself crossing my fingers and praying that we can make it day after day. If this air conditioning unit goes out I might go too.

I can admit that I have not always been the most organized person. Growing up my family called me Messy Jessy. I always keep my room in a bit of a tornado state. I like knowing where my things are but that doesn’t mean that they are put away. As you can imagine, this lack of organization has complicated things the older I’ve gotten. I might have all of my tasks completed for work but then I would completely neglect my own personal responsibilities. This went on for quite a while until my dog came down with terrible allergies. However, the bigger issue was my lack of heating and cooling maintenance. He could tell that I never changed my air filter and my air ducts were always dirty. He recommended that I set a schedule for my heating and cooling maintenance if I wanted to keep my air quality in amazing shape. That’s the day that I finally got a little organized; I started studying a separate calendar just for my HVAC maintenance.

For the past 10 years I have been experiencing horrific sinus infections in the summer.

I’ve never had respiratory illness before this point in my life. Then, all of a sudden it seems like my lungs and nose were continually angry when the warm season rolls around. It seems like every time I was inside of my apartment my sinus infection grew more painful and inflamed. I assumed that my air conditioning unit was the cause of my distress. Certainly, pumping a bunch of dry indoor air through my mucus membranes was drying them out and creating a more hospitable environment for airborne contaminants. I thought that I could get rid of my AC units or add additional humidity to the air to solve my respiratory problem. However, even after I took these air conditioning steps I still wasn’t able to save myself from persistent sinus problems. Eventually, I called out a professional heating and cooling technician to see if there were other air quality measures I could take. That’s when I found out about the mold. Apparently it wasn’t the air-conditioning I needed to worry about, it was the black field growing in my air ducts. All this time I was concerned with the level of dryness in my house when there was enough humidity to create a farm of mold.

I’ve been thinking a lot about one of my exes recently.

We would have had our four year anniversary the other day, had we stayed together.

Unfortunately, with all of this rattling around in my brain I have had a pretty difficult time. I’m not saying that I miss him or the relationship but there are aspects of it that I’m mourning. My ex got up in the middle of the night, drove to Walmart, and bought a high-quality AC window unit. He installed the cooling system above the bed that very night. Finally, I was able to get to sleep and we had air conditioning for the rest of our relationship. Considering that AC adventure, I miss him sometimes.

At the end of last spring, when I turned on the air conditioner, I immediately started sneezing.

I figured there was a buildup of dust within the system from it sitting idle.

I hoped that after it ran for a while, the problems would go away. Instead, my complaints only got worse. There were constantly particles floating around in the air and gathering on surfaces, requiring me to dust and vacuum far more often. The air coming from the vents had a strange smell, and I’d wake up every morning with a nasty headache. Plus, the air conditioner wasn’t keeping up with demand. I lowered the thermostat several times and yet certain rooms in the house felt slightly overheated and sticky. He then informed me that the majority of the issues were due to dirty ductwork. He said that every time the conditioned air passed through the duct system, it was picking up all sorts of harmful contaminants and spreading them throughout the house. The accumulation of debris within the pipes was also restricting airflow, forcing the air conditioner to run longer, work harder and consume more energy. He found all sorts of disgusting stuff concealed inside the ducts. There was mold growth, dander, pollen, bugs, webs and even some dead mice. I’ve now realized that I need to have the duct system professionally checked out every couple of years. The duct cleaning process wasn’t overly expensive and it solved all the concerns with the cooling system.

I was dreading the last job of the day on Friday, because it was an AC installation.

Those jobs can take five or six hours and I didn’t know what to expect.

That job was scheduled to start at 12, but I didn’t arrive until almost 2. I got stuck working on an air filtration problem at the aquatic Center and it took most of the morning to complete the repair. I expected to spend all afternoon and most of the evening working on the AC installation job. I was extremely happy to find out that I was only installing a small window AC unit. I didn’t have any information on the job and I assumed it was a full central AC installation. I should have read more information about the job, because I would not have spent all day feeling stressed out. It only took me an hour to install the window AC unit and it was easy. The customer had the window prepared and empty and all I had to do was place a few screws in the wall. I thought I wouldn’t get home until 9 at night, but I was already in my car by 5. It’s rare to get home early on a Friday night, so I decided to use the opportunity to have dinner with my folks. They live 20 miles away from my house, but it’s on the way home. I rarely stop due to traffic, but I decided to make a surprise visit when I finished early for the day. They were so happy to see me.

When you need to have the furnace serviced, it’s important to call a licensed professional. The right heating or cooling company should be certified, licensed, bonded, and insured. This is the only way to cover your home and your system in the event of damages from the company. I learned this lesson the hardest way possible. I bought a mobile home in a rent-to-own deal. The first few months went great and summer and fall seemed to fly by. I had lots of parties with my friends and we had a bonfire every weekend. I was very happy to be in the middle of the country where I didn’t have a lot of neighbors giving me a hard time every day. Then the cold weather set in during winter and I started to have some trouble with the furnace. I called a few professional companies and they wanted a fortune just to come out and diagnose the furnace issue. I thought I was lucky to find a cheap person on Facebook until they caused more damage. The guy stumbled all over the place and he appeared to be intoxicated. He never fixed the problem with the furnace and he spent almost two hours in the garage. At the end of the appointment, he expected me to pay $150. I had to call a real professional to fix the issue. I will never rely on another company that isn’t reputable in every way. In fact, now I am using an online site that keeps track of a business and their insurance and hundreds of reviews that are generated by actual customers.

My wife and I knew that we were having problems with the air conditioner, because the indoor air was starting to feel warm and clammy.

Even when the air conditioner was running nonstop, it was still struggling to cool the temperature down to 73 degrees.

During the summer time days, the best temperature we could achieve was 75 degrees. I talked to an HVAC company technician and they told me that the air conditioner can only remove so much key. On a day when the temperature is 105 degrees outside, the air conditioner is doing the best it can. On one hot summer day, my wife and I were noticing unusual problems and we felt it was necessary to contact a professional. We quickly found out that the coils were very dirty and filled with dust. Was causing some problems and the AC was not running properly due to this issue. My wife and I paid the professional to clean the evaporator coils and perform a full maintenance service on the air conditioner. They spent an hour cleaning the entire HVAC unit. Apparently this type of service should be performed regularly. After the service was completed, the indoor air was a few degrees cooler. We also bought a ceiling fan for the living room. The fan helps circulate the air and that makes the room a few degrees colder too. We still have trouble on the hottest days of summer, but at least we can feel cold air coming out of the ductwork. We know the problem isn’t something with the indoor A/C machine.
