You know, people drive me completely insane most of the time. I’m not sure if I was meant to be a part of this species, because I can’t stand most people who share 99% of the same DNA with me. I’m actually so opposed to meeting people from the general public after working in retail for a number of years. I lost all faith in humanity after working with idiots and catering to entitled jerks that I think I started to despise my own species here on earth. That being said, apparently I still have some expectations for my fellow man – at least, when I’ve hired them to do a job for me. Recently even the professionals that I hired managed to let me down and piss me right off when they didn’t finish my HVAC installation. After 10 years of waiting to be able to afford a new heating and cooling system, I was so excited to have the money for my air conditioner and furnace upgrades. I called my local air quality control repair shop and asked to arrange a full consultation for central HVAC devices. When they promised to send out a team of highly knowledgeable heating and cooling workers, I thought they meant it. Instead, I got the HVAC B-team. These guys took over 10 hours of banging around and disrupting my day before they reported that the HVAC installation was complete. And, like an idiot, I believed them. It was only after I tried to use my new thermostat that I realized the truth; they had set up the furnace, but not the AC unit. Did they think I wouldn’t notice the AC failure? Did they think I wouldn’t call the HVAC shop and demand a refund? Most baffling, did they think I needed a heater over the AC? It’s the middle of summer.

When I was growing up my family didn’t give me too many options.

I never had an interest in firearms and I didn’t appreciate the people who frequented our store. In fact, I was more interested in going into some kind of skilled trade job. I regularly picked up pamphlets from the local trade school and tried to figure out what kind of work I would like to go into. Eventually, I realized that their heating, cooling, and ventilation program was probably my best bet. The entire heating and cooling program took 18 months to complete. After that, you had an official HVAC certification under your belt. You could quickly start working for a residential heating and cooling repair shop as a professional air quality control specialist. This seemed very appealing to me. After a few years working in residential heating, cooling, and air quality control services, however, I absolutely didn’t feel so sunny about the residential HVAC game. In fact, I was tired of visiting random people’s houses and dealing with their constant complaints. I decided it was time to go into commercial heating and cooling solutions. When I joined the commercial HVAC crew I realized that it was much better money for much less work. Maybe we work 12 to 16-hour days sometimes but I never have to drive all over the city. Plus, no one is complaining to me about their HVAC devices when I try to work. When I didn’t go into the family business, it was to avoid the general public. Finally, I can do the same in my HVAC career.

When I tell people about the city where I live these days I generally get the same two comments.

One group of people will comment on the horrific weather conditions that they imagined I experienced there.

The city has a well-known nickname that includes the word “hot” right in it. The other thing that I usually hear about is the god awful traffic in my city. I’m here to tell you, both of those stereotypes about my current residential situation are correct. It is oppressively hot and humid here almost every day of the year. At the same time, you will sit in your car and sweat on the highway for several hours each week. Traffic is an unfortunate occurrence in between your starting and ending points. For me, sitting in traffic jams feels a lot like being stuck in between air conditioning systems. You leave the comfort of your home AC unit and get trapped outside before you can reach the safety and comfort of your work air conditioning system. That is, if you have a working AC unit at your house. Recently, I had no air conditioning power in my home thanks to an AC breakdown. I knew that the cooling system was going to need a professional repair or upgrade relatively soon. However, the day that it broke down I was not prepared for the HVAC expense. When I set off for work that morning I was not happy to find myself sitting and swelteringly hot traffic. It was even worse to stare helplessly at all of the billboards for professional air conditioning repair shops while I waited for cars to get out of the way.

There’s nothing worse than being forced to attend family obligations with your significant other.

It’s bad enough to deal with your own family, let alone going to a bunch of ruckus parties and tense dinners with your boyfriend.

Unfortunately, this was a major part of my life when I was living with my ex. We had to spend a lot of time with his extended family because they lived near his son and we lived several states away. As such, we stayed at his parents house very often and dealt with the discomfort. The only thing that made the situation better was their high quality indoor air equipment. His family had a lot more money than I could comprehend. They had advanced indoor air quality control equipment installed throughout the entire house. I know that their furnace, cooling system, and air purification units were hefty to install and maintain. It seems like the heating and cooling technician was at their house every other week to perform some kind of routine service or upgrade. They also lived in an extremely hot and humid climate where it was necessary to use the HVAC system all the time. Whenever we stayed there I absolutely hated going outside and experiencing the warm, oppressively humid air. However, at least I could always look forward to the air conditioning inside of his parents home. It felt like walking into a freezer when you entered their AC. I was always jealous of the cooling system that they were able to afford… But I was more jealous of my friends who never had to spend extended amounts of time at their in-laws house.

When I was growing up I always thought that I had it very rough.

I definitely grew up in a challenging home where we didn’t exactly get along with each other.

My parents had their own mental health issues and they passed them right along to their kids. I understand why things happened this way but I also felt like I got jipped out of a good family experience. I also always felt as though I was lacking in the heating and air conditioning department. We weren’t allowed to use the thermostat in our house because it was too expensive. If we turned on any of the indoor air handling devices my parents would get very upset. Although we had an air conditioning unit and forced air furnace, they were off-limits to all of us. I thought it couldn’t get any worse than the warm indoor air that I had to live with as a kid. I was wrong. Soon after moving out I wound up in a small apartment where I had three roommates. There were four bedrooms in the apartment but only one air conditioning unit. And it wasn’t a large, powerful cooling system. We had one AC window unit in the living room and that was it. We couldn’t have air conditioning units in our bedrooms because the windows opened the wrong way. Unfortunately, this became the most hot and difficult place I’ve ever lived. I’ve never had such brutal humidity and overheated nights as I experienced in this place. Suddenly, my childhood home didn’t look so bad – actually, it seemed pretty cool.

I feel like I’m constantly checking on things.

Because I work for a place that is extremely chaotic all the time I never get a break from staring at my phone or looking at my email inbox.

I’m constantly worried about some details slipping through the cracks. At the same time, I have a lot of pressure in my home living situation. I have kids running all over the place and needy animals to worry about. It seems like I can never just focus on a single task because my eyes have to be in all directions at all times. This is also true when it comes to the heating and cooling system these days. Specifically, it seems like our air conditioning unit has given up on life. Several years ago I realized that the AC system wasn’t doing so well but it still put out plenty of high quality indoor air. Recently, I noticed that the airflow was supremely lacking. There were a lot of hot and cold patches around the house and the air temperature fluctuated wildly. I got tired of realizing that the air conditioning unit had stopped working after several hours. At that point it was difficult to get the indoor air back on track. I felt like my energy bills were climbing through the roof when my air conditioning unit had to sprint to make up for lost time. As such, the best resolution I could come up with was to tie streamers to all of our air vents. Now, while I’m working I have to keep one eye on the kids, one eye on my email, and one eye on the air vents overhead. It’s those streamers ever stop blowing, it’s time to reset the AC unit.
