For the past few months I’ve been staying at my mom’s house.

I hope I don’t sound overly dramatic, but I am really not looking forward to going home in a few weeks.

I know, I know, everyone has to go back to the place where they reside at some point or another. But in the midst of all the things that have been happening on this planet, it’s been hard to comprehend returning to the place where I am almost totally alone. It’s actually been really reassuring to spend time with my family during this worldwide upset. Beyond that, I can tell you that I’m growing very concerned when it comes to the temperature change I’m about to endure. At my mom’s house, I can adjust the thermostat however I want. She has central heating and cooling, and it’s no problem to utilize the large forced air furnace or AC unit whenever the indoor air needs a bit of a change. The air quality is always well managed and the HVAC system is powerful enough to handle even extreme temperatures. At my house, however, the HVAC system is a completely different story. It isn’t energy efficient or highly powerful. The heating and cooling devices are actually extremely old and difficult to use if you want any sort of even indoor air temperature. It’s normal for extreme temperature fluctuations and drafts to dominate the inner air conditions. That’s why I’m planning on buying up as many space heaters as possible on my way back home. If I arrive with enough smaller air temperature control devices in tow, maybe the transition won’t be as bad as I’m expecting. Maybe.

I’m not the sort of person who enjoys having a very complicated living situation.

Honestly, I enjoy keeping things as simple and straight-forward as possible.

I always buy the same foods, products, and services rather than investigating new options in any area of my life. I’m not the sort of person who likes to change things or implement new difficult systems that have to be adapted overtime. That being said, apparently it is absolutely necessary for me to have a convoluted indoor air temperature control system these days. For my entire life I have had extremely simple indoor air temperature preferences and demands. If I can have a central heating, cooling, and air quality control system with a programmable thermostat I am completely happy. As long as I can adjust the indoor air temperature up and down as well as program my temperature control preferences to automatically alter the furnace and air conditioning system usage… I’m pretty pleased. Unfortunately, my dog doesn’t feel the same. Since I got a new dog in my life it has become obvious that I’m going to need a new air quality control system in my life. For whatever reason, my dog absolutely hates my central heating and cooling system. I can’t have the central HVAC system running without my dog barking his head off. I’ve decided that the only option is to change my heating and cooling plan by installing a mini split ductless heating and cooling system so that my dog will finally quiet down. I don’t enjoy making things more complicated than they need to be… but I also need so silence.

Just a word of advice to anyone who regularly has people over to their home… make sure you have a nice bathroom for your guests.

• I mean, it’s pretty obvious that you need to have a clean restroom with plenty of available toiletries for people.

Never make someone go through the unpleasant experience of sitting down and finding that there’s no toilet paper or hand soap to finish up their activity. It’s also totally disgusting to have soap scum, dried pee, and mildew floating around the space. However, one thing that no one ever seems to fully consider is the necessity for a working ventilation fan in the bathroom. For whatever reason, this ventilation device is often overlooked or disregarded entirely… and it creates awkward situations for your guests. There is nothing worse than realizing you need to do some more potent, odorous business, and finding out that there’s no way to remove the airborne contaminants from the indoor air after you’ve already gotten started. If you’re at all embarrassed about leaving behind unfortunate smells and airborne toxins, then it’s a major problem to realize that the fan which is responsible for exchanging high and low quality indoor air in the restroom is non-functional. It’s rare to even have access to outdoor air via a bathroom window in many circumstances – so the threat of stinking up the indoor air is truly a big problem. Next time you have guests at your place, make sure that the ventilation fan and air exchange system are working effectively to remove unwanted, embarrassing odors.

I’m not sure what it is about me, but people seem to think that I am some sort of authority figure.

I guess I have a natural leadership tendency to my personality, or something like that.

No matter what you want to call it, something about me has the effect of imparting confidence and fear in other human beings… it’s a gift and a curse, really. For instance, when I need something to get done quickly and correctly, my authoritative tone helps a great deal. However, when other folks assume that I’m a good boss in areas that I know nothing about – like HVAC systems – I get myself into trouble. This is exactly what happened last week when my boss went out of town and left me in charge of the heating, cooling, and air quality control maintenance appointment that he had arranged at the shop. For the past several months we had been experiencing fluctuating indoor air temperatures and failing air quality. The energy bills were climbing through the roof. It was obvious that we needed a professional HVAC tune up to get through the rest of the winter without our furnace completely failing. All of that being said, I know nothing about HVAC systems or furnace repair. When my boss left me in charge of the professional heating and cooling service, I agreed… but I had no idea what the HVAC technician was telling me. After the air quality specialist had installed a brand new furnace and sent the charges to my boss, he had a lot of questions about this routine repair escalating into a full-blown furnace installation.
