Growing up, we didn’t have a lot of technology around us. It feels odd admitting it, but it seemed like our parents were a little afraid of new technology. They believed the naysayers who predicted technology was here to ruin their lives and take their jobs. And in a way, they were right since my dad lost his factory job to automation. With that, I grew a little wary of new technology and didn’t embrace many changes in my home. I barely wanted any smart devices in my space as an adult, but all that changed when my grandchild was born. She was such a smart cookie and loved playing with her gadgets. I realized it was hard for me to help her with her games because I didn’t know-how. So, I began learning and even got a laptop to use in my home when she came over. Another change I made involved my air conditioning. I had the old thermostat with a knob that I’d use to change the temperature settings for a long time. But, when I went to visit my son and his family, I saw they had a smart thermostat. It was such a wonderful unit that you could control using an app on a smartphone. Without letting them know, I called an AC professional to my house to install a smart thermostat and show me how to work it using my phone. I planned to surprise my grandchild on her next visit. Learning how to use apps was surprisingly easy, and it even changed the efficiency of my air conditioning system.
