Shaving down the heating costs with better preparation

Learning just how best to live in this climate has had a bit of a learning curve to it. Initially, when I first moved up here, I was completely unprepared for how tough the winters can be. I moved up toward the end of summer that first year. And for me, I thought I was in heaven because the temperatures were so much cooler than at home. Where I come from, you tend to spend summer afternoons inside the HVAC cooling of a home or office. But when I got up here, it felt great and it was still just barely August. The fall was beautiful as I had not experienced the sort of leaf color this area enjoys. Soon though, I was feeling a cold wind that I had not experienced before. And that was nothing. By Halloween, I already had the gas furnace cranked. So you can imagine what that first taste of real winter was like. It was all I could do to go outside to get in my car to go to work. And even at work, I had a space heater under my desk. Now, I’m three years in and much better at winter. Plus, I’ve learned to save on heating costs by preparing for winter. I have the HVAC professionals come out to do the heating maintenance on the gas furnace in early fall. And I make sure the house remains really tight by replacing weather stripping or adding additional insulation where needed. And I suppose I’ve acclimated to the cold a bit as I’m better at thermostat discipline than I was. However, there is still a space heater under my desk at work.
